“Prescribed fire shrub consumption in a Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forest

چکیده
Live shrubs in forest understories pose a challenge for mitigating wildfire risk with prescribed fire. Factors driving shrub consumption fires are variable and difficult to explain. This study investigated spatial patterns drivers of Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer through analysis high-resolution imagery taken before after We applied spatially explicit, generalized additive model assess tree cover coarse woody material as potential consumption. Shrub two experimental stands prior burning was 38% 59% 36% 45% one-year post-burn. In both patch density increased, while area-weighted mean size largest index decreased. Increased local percent associated increased These findings provide information fire managers help better anticipate patchiness outcomes under similar conditions.

Fuel treatment longevity in a Sierra Nevada mixed conifer forest
Understanding the longevity of fuel treatments in terms of their ability to maintain fire behavior and effects within a desired range is an important question. The objective of this study was to determine how fuels, forest structure, and predicted fire behavior changed 7-years after initial treatments. Three different treatments: mechanical only, mechanical plus fire, and prescribed fire only, ...
متن کاملMacro-Particle Charcoal C Content following Prescribed Burning in a Mixed-Conifer Forest, Sierra Nevada, California
Fire suppression and changing climate have resulted in increased large wildfire frequency and severity in the western United States, causing carbon cycle impacts. Forest thinning and prescribed burning reduce high-severity fire risk, but require removal of biomass and emissions of carbon from burning. During each fire a fraction of the burning vegetation and soil organic matter is converted int...

Logistic regression equations of prescribed fire mortality were developed for white fir (Abies concolor [Gord. and Glend.] Lindl.), sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Dougl.), ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Laws.), incense-cedar (Calocedrus decurrens [Torr.] Floren.), and giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum [Lindley] Buchholz) in the southern Sierra Nevada, California. A total of 1025 trees wer...
متن کاملSoil Arthropod Responses to Different Patch Types in a Mixed-Conifer Forest of the Sierra Nevada
The Teakettle Ecosystem Experiment in the southern Sierra Nevada is using thinning and prescribed fire to recreate historical stand conditions. As part of Teakettle we assessed pretreatment diversity and density of the soil arthropod community in 1998 and 2000. We determined the density and diversity of soil microarthropods among treatment plots, the influence of patch type (closed canopy, cano...
متن کاملSoil Moisture Response to Snowmelt and Rainfall in a Sierra Nevada Mixed-Conifer Forest
Using data from a water-balance instrument cluster with spatially distributed sensors we determined the magnitude and within-catchment variability of components of the catchmentscale water balance, focusing on the relationship of seasonal evapotranspiration to changes in snowpack and soil moisture storage. Co-located, continuous snow depth and soil moisture measurements were deployed in a rain–...
